The German Chancellor reacted to the US State Department's initiative to fund organizations in Europe that support causes related to the MAGA movement.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called on the administration of US President Donald Trump not to interfere in the elections in Germany, following the US State Department's announcement of a funding program that, according to critics, could favor organizations and groups close to the MAGA movement in Europe.
The initiative provides grants of up to $3 million to nonprofit organizations, think tanks, and individuals in European countries. According to the State Department, the funds are intended to support projects that address issues such as “national sovereignty, migration, censorship, and legal challenges,” consistent with “shared political philosophy, the rule of law, and the shared Western civilizational heritage.”
Speaking at his annual press conference in Berlin, Merz said he does not want the US to influence German regional elections in September.
" We do not interfere in American elections. In the same way, I do not want the American government or institutions close to it to interfere in German elections ," he declared.
Former US State Department officials said the new program is part of a months-long strategy to direct US funds towards supporting right-wing groups and, potentially, political parties in Europe.
According to them, the wording of the program's terms is unclear. The announcement states that "individuals" and "government institutions" can apply for funding, without clarifying which categories are specifically included.
Previous reports have suggested that the Trump administration is also interested in funding political parties in Europe, although this could face restrictions under US foreign aid law.
Merz recalled that German law prohibits the financing of political parties from abroad.
“It appears that the State Department is trying to influence the balance of elections in Europe, giving right-wing parties an unfair advantage through resources they would not normally have,” said a former department official.
The initiative comes after critical statements towards traditional European allies by Trump administration officials, including Vice President JD Vance, regarding migration, abortion and cybersecurity policies.
American officials have also intensified contacts with social-conservative organizations and right-wing parties in Europe.
The new US national security strategy, published in December, states that Europe faces a "civilizational demise", while assessing the growing influence of "European patriotic parties".
Last month, the British government rejected claims by a senior US State Department official, Sarah B. Rogers, who had stated that British police were making thousands of arrests due to "freedom of expression."
Rogers has become one of the Trump administration's most prominent voices in criticizing European liberal democracies. Earlier this year, during a visit to Ireland, she pledged $500,000 in US funding to promote "digital freedom."
The grant program is administered by the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor at the U.S. Department of State. This structure, created during the presidency of Jimmy Carter to promote human rights during the Cold War, has been reoriented under the Trump administration.
According to reports, potential beneficiaries of the funds could include conservative organizations in Britain and other European groups that promote freedom of expression or that have lost financial support following political changes in Hungary. / Pamphlet
