Russia is planning attacks on critical infrastructure in the Baltic states or Poland, the presidents of Lithuania and Latvia warned today, referring to reports from their countries' intelligence services.
“ We are talking about energy or transport infrastructure – facilities, damage to which could disrupt the functioning of the entire energy system ,” Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda said at a press conference in Vilnius, alongside his Latvian counterpart Edgars Rinkēvičs.
According to Nausėda, these attacks are "planned at the highest level, specifically in Moscow."
The President of Latvia said that "the information we receive from Lithuania, Latvia, other NATO countries, as well as from various intelligence services, indicates various attempts to prepare acts of sabotage and hybrid attacks."
Rinkēvičs stressed that the Baltic countries – Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania – along with Poland, all members of the European Union and NATO, should prepare for provocative actions by Russia, as Moscow aims to “test” NATO’s collective defense mechanism.
" Even without achieving a complete victory in Ukraine, Russia could try to indirectly test Article 5 and the response mechanisms of the Alliance and the European Union ," he said.
These warnings add to concerns recently expressed by the media and leaders of countries on NATO's eastern flank. In late June, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk declared that "various forms of escalation" were expected "in the coming weeks and months," calling the situation "very unstable."
Officials in the Baltic states and Poland are now blaming Moscow for a series of "provocations," including arson, cyberattacks, and acts of sabotage on railway lines.
The Lithuanian president said that his country has already strengthened security measures for transport and energy infrastructure.
On the other hand, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed these warnings.
According to him, "this is another set of scare stories, aimed at continuing the brainwashing and preparing the population for extreme militarization."
