Triglycerides are a type of fat composed of three fatty acids – saturated, unsaturated, or a combination of them – and glycerol, a compound related to glucose metabolism. They represent the main source of energy for the body and are essential for normal body function.

The body obtains triglycerides in two ways: through food and through their production in the liver. When we consume foods such as meat, dairy, oils or products with a high fat content, triglycerides are absorbed in the intestine and transported to the tissues by lipoproteins. There they are used immediately as a source of energy or stored as a reserve for future needs.

When do triglycerides become a problem?
High levels of triglycerides in the blood can increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. For this reason, doctors recommend regularly checking them, along with cholesterol.

Increased triglycerides can be related to genetic factors, such as familial hypertriglyceridemia, but in many cases it is also influenced by lifestyle.

Among the main factors that favor their growth are:

lack of physical activity and sedentary lifestyle;
diet rich in saturated fats and added sugars;
overweight and obesity;
alcohol consumption, which in some people can significantly increase triglycerides even in small amounts.
