At least one person was killed and seven others were injured as dozens of Iskander-M and Zircon missiles hit the Ukrainian capital, causing fires and damage in several areas.
Russia carried out one of the largest ballistic missile attacks on Kiev overnight since the start of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, unleashing a barrage of missiles that lasted about five hours.
According to Ukrainian authorities, the capital was hit by about 40 Iskander-M ballistic missiles and Zircon hypersonic missiles. The air raid alert was activated at around 01:30, as residents first heard the sound of air defense systems and then a series of powerful explosions.
Dozens of rockets hit the city in less than an hour, shaking buildings in Kiev's historic center and setting off car alarms. A second airstrike alert was issued at around 6:30 a.m., when more strikes were reported.
A three-story building in the central Shevchenkivskyi district was engulfed in flames. Rescuers pulled several people from the rubble and recovered the body of one victim. Fires and damage were also reported in four other areas of the city, where residential buildings, offices and a dormitory were hit.
Footage released by residents sheltering at the Lukyanivska metro station showed the ceiling of the station's entrance collapsing as a result of the powerful blast wave. Authorities announced that the station has been temporarily closed.
The Kiev military administration confirmed that at least one person was killed, while Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced that seven people were injured.
Russia has intensified missile and drone attacks on Kiev and other Ukrainian cities, which now occur almost daily. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly called on Western allies to strengthen Ukraine's air defenses and supply the country with additional US Patriot systems, capable of intercepting ballistic missiles.
According to reports, Ukrainian stocks of interceptor missiles are dwindling, making defense against such attacks increasingly difficult.
The attack comes at a time of heightened internal tensions in Ukraine, where anti-government protests have taken place in Kiev following President Zelensky's decision to dismiss Defense Minister Mykhailo Federov. Protesters are demanding his reinstatement and the removal of the army's commander-in-chief, Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi.
