An unusual proposal by Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir has sparked reactions in Israel after he called for prisons, which also hold Palestinian prisoners, to be surrounded by crocodiles to prevent escapes.
To pave the way for this idea, the Minister of Environmental Protection, Idit Silman, reclassified Nile crocodiles, allowing their use for security purposes.
Ben Gvir said he was inspired by the immigration detention center in Florida, known as "Alligator Alcatraz."
"Are you thinking of trying to escape? Think again," he wrote on Facebook, posting an artificial intelligence-generated image of himself holding a crocodile on a leash.
The caption of the post read: "Ministers Ben Gvir and Silman collaborate to surround prisons with crocodiles!"
According to Israeli television Channel 13, the Israel Nature and Parks Authority opposed the change, as the reclassification transfers oversight of crocodiles to a "security body," a category that also includes the Israel Prison Service, which Ben Gvir heads.
The new regulation, which came into force on Wednesday, stipulates that Nile crocodiles can be kept by security entities, provided that they are kept so that they do not escape into the wild and only if the Minister of Environmental Protection considers their possession necessary for security reasons.
