Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko has said that Ukraine is in dire need of US support, despite some surprising comments from former US President Donald Trump regarding the war in Ukraine.
Speaking before the British parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, Klitschko stressed that the US remains a key partner for Kiev. " The United States is a very important partner. We need the US to be on Ukraine's side ," he said, adding that it is "very important to have a good relationship and understanding with President Trump."
Klitschko also stressed that defending democracy in Ukraine is essential not only for the country, but also for strengthening Europe. According to him, preserving democratic institutions in wartime is a key element for the stability of the continent.
During the hearing, the Kyiv mayor also touched on the issue of Ukrainian children taken during the Russian occupation. He called on the United Kingdom and other allies to increase pressure on Russia and President Vladimir Putin for their return. “ We are talking about the new generation. Without children, without our citizens, what are we left with? ” Klitschko said. According to an estimate by the Yale University Humanitarian Research Laboratory, more than 35,000 Ukrainian children have been sent to over 100 locations in Russia and occupied territories.
Klitschko said that about 600,000 Ukrainian refugees from the east and south of the country have moved to Kiev. He explained that this is due to the higher security of the capital, which is better protected by air defense systems, as well as the more advanced services it offers, including healthcare and education.
Asked about his relationship with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Klitschko acknowledged that running the country in times of war is extremely difficult. He stressed that, despite previous criticism, internal political unity is essential. “It is very important to have unity within the country, because this makes Ukraine stronger,” he said.
In his most scathing statements, Klitschko accused Russia of genocide against the Ukrainian people, claiming that eastern Ukraine is “completely destroyed.” According to him, Vladimir Putin’s main goal remains the occupation of Kiev and control of all of Ukraine.
