Iran's Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, said in a written statement on Tuesday that the United States and Israel are seeking to "divide" Iran after it suffered a "devastating defeat" in a war that broke out against his country.
"Their main tool" to weaken Iran "is to sow doubt, despair, fear, mistrust and division," Khamenei said in a text read publicly, adding that the "evil enemy" suffered a "devastating defeat on the battlefield."
His statement was read at the mausoleum of Ayatollah Khomeini in Tehran, on the occasion of the 37th anniversary of the death of the founder of the Islamic Republic.
"In the face of these destructive intentions, everyone must, with strength, insight, maintaining unity and cohesion, mutual trust, and rejecting the spread of the enemy's propaganda, neutralize his insidious plot," the message added.
Upon the death of Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989, Ali Khamenei succeeded him as supreme leader, until his assassination on February 28, the first day of the Israeli and American attack that sparked war in the Middle East region.
Mojtaba Khamenei, who succeeded his father after his appointment in early March as the third supreme leader of the Islamic Republic, has not made any public appearances, only written statements are attributed to him.
At the Imam Khomeini mausoleum, worshippers waved portraits of the three leaders, according to images broadcast by state television.
Others waved the flag of the Islamic Republic, as well as that of the Lebanese group Hezbollah, a movement supported financially and militarily by Tehran and which fights Israel, their common sworn enemy.
Every June 4 since 1989, the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has delivered a speech marking the anniversary of Khomeini's death. This year, an empty chair with his portrait was placed in the mausoleum, according to footage broadcast on state television.
