8 killed and dozens injured in Gaza, Netanyahu tightens military control

Gaza City has been hit again by Israeli airstrikes, which according to Palestinian civil defense authorities have caused at least eight deaths and 15 injuries.

According to civil defense spokesman Mahmoud Bassal, the deadliest attack occurred in the northwest of the city, where five people were killed after an apartment was hit. Two other casualties were reported in an attack in southwest Gaza, while one person was killed after a house was bombed in the Ash Shati refugee camp.

The incident is another indication of the unstable situation in the Palestinian enclave, where violence has not completely stopped even after the ceasefire announced on October 10, 2025, which aimed to end the two-year conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Gaza's Health Ministry figures show that over 900 Palestinians have been killed since the ceasefire came into effect. According to the United Nations, the statistics published by the ministry are considered generally reliable.

Although the initial agreement resulted in the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas and a number of Palestinian prisoners by Israel, the process has stalled in the second phase. This phase envisaged the disarmament of Hamas and the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, but no significant progress has been made so far.

In this climate of tension, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced last week that he had ordered the army to expand control over Gaza territory, with the goal of taking control of 70 percent of the enclave. Current estimates show that the Israeli army controls about 60 percent of the territory.

Meanwhile, Israeli military operations have continued to target Hamas' leadership. In late May, an airstrike killed Mohammed Oda, who had taken over as head of the organization's military wing just days earlier after the assassination of his predecessor. The development is seen as another blow to Hamas' military leadership and an indication that the conflict remains far from a lasting solution.
