United States President Donald Trump publicly attacked CNN journalist Kaitlan Collins during a press conference at the White House, in a confrontation that attracted widespread international attention.
The clash began after Collins asked Trump about a $1.8 billion fund created during his term to financially compensate political allies who, he said, were prosecuted during the administration of former President Joe Biden. Trump said he continues to support the fund.
During his response, the US president criticized the media for spreading "fake news," singling out CNN. He then addressed Collins personally.
"CNN is a very corrupt organization, with a corrupt journalist who stands there and never smiles," Trump said, pointing at the CNN correspondent at the White House.
He continued with personal comments towards her, saying: "She's a young and beautiful woman, but I never see her smile. I see her standing there with hatred in her eyes."
Trump also added: "You should be ashamed of yourself. You used to be a conservative from Alabama."
Collins replied curtly: "I'm still from Alabama."
The president's comments sparked widespread backlash on social media, with some users calling his behavior inappropriate and criticizing the tone he used toward the journalist.
Meanwhile, Collins has previously spoken about the difficulties of interviewing Trump. In an appearance on "Watch What Happens Live" with Andy Cohen, she said she often had to maintain a professional composure during conversations with the president.
"I try to be myself, but I want the interviews to focus on the person I'm interviewing and their answers, because it's usually about politicians and people who are paid by taxpayers," Collins said.
She added that, on several occasions, she had to "bite her tongue" or grip her pen tightly to keep from reacting during interviews with Trump.
