A cold front from Canada is expected to bring at least 30 cm of snow to a region stretching from Michigan to what is known as "New England."
Meanwhile, 16 million Americans are on alert for winter storms, weather forecasters said Wednesday.
The storm, which has already brought snow from Iowa to Kansas this morning, is expected to strengthen as it moves east, said Rich Otto, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center.
The severe weather, which will affect the central Great Plains, Midwest and Northeast, is expected to peak Monday night into Tuesday.
"It's a first glimpse of winter, and I think that's good if you like snow," Otto said.
Meanwhile, residents in Washington, Philadelphia and Boston are expected to face rain and hail, he said.
The new wave of severe weather comes after a storm that "dressed" parts of the country in white, causing traffic problems in Iowa, Indiana, Illinois and areas in the Midwest, the meteorologist noted.
Indiana police said on social media that icy roads and low visibility contributed to a 50-vehicle crash on Interstate 70 in Terre Haute on Saturday. In Chicago, snow totals reached 10 inches over the weekend.
Brandon Buckingham, a meteorologist with private weather service AccuWeather, warned travelers that road conditions would worsen from Monday into Tuesday evening.
"Snow equals travel disruption," he said.
