Italian health authorities have activated laboratory structures and the infectiology network following cases linked to Hantavirus, although experts emphasize that the situation remains under control and there is no reason to panic.

In the Lombardy region, the laboratories of the "Sacco" hospitals in Milan and "San Matteo" in Pavia have been put on alert, while the emergency departments have also been notified in case of new developments.

Andrea Gori, professor of Infectious Diseases at the University of Milan and head of the Infectious Diseases Department at the "Fatebenefratelli Sacco" hospital, told ANSA that the Italian control system is prepared and coordinated.

According to him, one of the elements that requires attention is the long incubation period of the virus. Unlike Covid-19, Hantavirus symptoms can appear up to six weeks after infection.

Meanwhile, Italian media reported that a 25-year-old man from Calabria, who had traveled on the same plane for a few minutes with a South African woman who later died from the virus, has shown suspected symptoms.

The young man was already in quarantine and it was initially reported that he would be transferred to the Spallanzani hospital in Rome for further examinations.

However, the president of the Lazio region, Francesco Rocca, later clarified that there had been a misunderstanding in communication between doctors and that only the patient's biological samples would be sent to the hospital for laboratory analysis.

Italian authorities continue to monitor the situation, while experts emphasize that for the moment the risk level remains low.
