Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared that Russia will put into operation by the end of this year the new strategic nuclear missile "Sarmat", which he described as "the most powerful in the world".
The statement was made during a televised meeting with the commander of the Strategic Missile Forces, General Sergei Karakayev. According to Putin, the missile has a destructive power several times greater than Western systems and a range exceeding 35,000 kilometers.
"It has the ability to penetrate all existing and future missile defense systems," the Russian president declared.
The deployment of the Sarmat system comes after years of delays and technical problems during testing. Western experts have reported that a test conducted in September 2024 failed, causing a large crater in the launch silo.
However, Russian state television broadcast footage of General Karakayev reporting on a successful missile test on Tuesday.
According to the Russian commander, the systems equipped with the Sarmat missile will significantly increase the capacity of Russia's strategic nuclear ground forces and strengthen the country's deterrent capability.
Western security analysts have previously expressed skepticism about some of the Kremlin's claims about the new strategic weapons, arguing that Moscow has exaggerated their real capabilities as part of the military modernization program announced by Putin in 2018.
Since the start of the war in Ukraine in 2022, the Russian president has repeatedly mentioned the country's nuclear arsenal, in statements that the West has interpreted as attempts to prevent more direct involvement in support of Ukraine.
