Conflict with Iran, the US warns of two scenarios!
Pete Hegseth

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that the Pentagon has prepared plans for any possible development of the conflict with Iran, including both the escalation of military operations and the withdrawal or reorganisation of US forces in the region.

The statements were made during a congressional hearing, where Hegseth faced numerous questions from Democratic and Republican lawmakers regarding the war in Iran, its costs and the Trump administration's long-term strategy.

"We have a plan to escalate the situation if necessary. We have a plan to back down if necessary. We have a plan to relocate assets," Hegseth told the congressional subcommittee.

However, he avoided giving concrete details about future military steps, arguing that the situation remains highly sensitive and is directly related to President Donald Trump's objective of preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

The Pentagon chief's comments come at a time of heightened tensions in the Middle East, as Iran continues to exert pressure through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic corridor through which about 20% of the world's oil passes. Tehran has reportedly restricted maritime movement in the area, raising concerns about the impact on global energy markets.

Hegseth also stated that the ceasefire with Iran "remains in effect," despite recent incidents in the Persian Gulf and allegations of Iranian attacks on American ships.

"The ceasefire means that the fire is ceasing, and we know that this has happened while negotiations are taking place," he said.

In his testimony, Hegseth also defended the Trump administration's request for a $1.5 trillion military budget, which he described as "historic" and necessary to strengthen American military capabilities.

According to him, the funds will be used to modernize the army, increase troop salaries, improve military infrastructure, and expand strategic defense projects.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon admitted that the cost of military operations against Iran has reached about $29 billion, a figure higher than previous estimates due to operational expenses and the replacement of military equipment.

Hegseth also responded to criticism about the lack of ammunition and missiles following operations in the region, insisting that American reserves remain sufficient.

"The ammunition issue has been unnecessarily exaggerated. We know exactly what we have and we have plenty of what we need ," he declared.
