Nello Trocchian has investigated the Roman clans, especially the Casamonica clan, the Albanian mafia, the infiltration of the mafia into Italian municipalities and the long period of fugitive Matteo Messina Denaro.
The Italian Interior Ministry has placed daytime police protection on investigative journalist Nello Trocchia, following numerous threats related to his work on organized crime, international drug trafficking and links between the mafia and politics.
The decision was made following assessments by security authorities and alerts received by the Anti-Mafia Directorate of the Rome District, which has been following the case due to the nature of the threats and the people involved.
Trocchia, a journalist from Naples and author of several investigations into the Italian mafia and Albanian criminal groups, has recently returned to the spotlight after the publication of several parts of his book "Invincibili. La mafia albanese da Roma alla conquista del mondo", which deals with drug trafficking networks and the relations between organized crime and politics.
In interviews given to Albanian and Italian media, Trocchia has also spoken about a meeting held in Aruba in 2019, which, according to documents cited in anti-mafia investigations, is suspected of having included exponents of Albanian criminal groups and persons connected to the Albanian government.
According to the journalist, the wiretaps and investigative documents mention "high-level figures" of Edi Rama's government, while he stated that the Anti-Mafia Directorate has confirmed the existence of a meeting in the Caribbean "between Shehu and his associates with unspecified figures of the incumbent government."
"There are wiretapped conversations where high-level people in Edi Rama's government are being talked about," Trocchia declared in an interview, adding that it remains the duty of the institutions to clarify the identity and role of the people involved.
The Italian journalist has also consistently addressed the issue of corruption and the influence of the Albanian mafia on the country's economy and politics. In his book, he includes interviews with former Italian magistrates and anti-mafia investigators, who talk about the links between corruption, institutions and the power of criminal organizations in Albania.
According to Italian media, among the episodes that have prompted the authorities to take protective measures against Trocchia are threats from people linked to criminal circles and ultras groups. One of the names mentioned is Walter Domizi, known in the Roman criminal world by the nickname "Gattino", previously convicted of drug trafficking and involved in investigations into international narcotics trafficking.
The file also mentions Antonio Prestia, considered by investigators to be a person close to the Guarnera clan and suspected of having exerted pressure on the journalist due to his investigative work.
The case has brought into focus the issue of the safety of investigative journalists in Italy, especially those who report on the mafia and international drug trafficking networks.
Following the decision of the Italian Ministry of the Interior, Nello Trocchia thanked the institutions for their support and stated that he will continue his work.
"The institutions have decided to increase the level of protection for me by assigning a bodyguard. I thank those responsible for my safety," Trocchia commented in Il Domani, adding: "I simply feel a renewed sense of responsibility that should accompany my profession. I will continue to tell stories and territories plundered by criminal powers, a city, the capital of our country, which has become a center for drug trafficking. I thank my newspaper, the people who support my work, my loved ones, the colleagues who have expressed their support."
