US President Donald Trump has shared a video on his Truth Social platform that includes images of Barack and Michelle Obama depicted as monkeys, through a clip generated with artificial intelligence.
The video was released on Thursday evening and focuses primarily on Trump's claims of fraud in the 2020 presidential election.
At the end of the video, an AI-generated clip appears, where the faces of former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama are superimposed on the bodies of monkeys, accompanied by the song “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” by the band The Tokens. The original clip belongs to a pro-Trump account on the social network X, but was reposted by Trump himself on Truth Social.

The publication has caused strong reactions in the American political scene. The office of California Governor Gavin Newsom called the video "disgusting behavior by the President" and demanded that "every Republican condemn this action," through a post on X.
It is not clear whether Trump was aware of the specific content of the Obama images, according to reports. Shortly after the video was released, he posted another piece that addressed the history of the African-American conservative movement within the Republican Party.
The clashes between Trump and Barack Obama have a long history, dating back to when Trump promoted claims that Obama was born outside the United States. During his second term, Trump has intensified his attacks on the former president, publicly accusing him of “treason” and of spying on his campaign during the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. He has also previously shared AI-generated memes depicting Obama’s arrest and imprisonment.
The White House defended the release of the video. Press secretary Caroline Leavitt told the Daily Mail that the video was “an internet meme that portrays President Trump as the King of the Jungle and Democrats as characters from ‘The Lion King,’” and called on the media to “stop the false outrage.”
However, even Republicans critical of Trump condemned the action. The “Republicans Against Trump” account on X accused the President of promoting racist imagery. Democratic strategist Adam Parkhomenko called the video “blatant racism,” stressing that there is no room for misinterpretation.
According to Truth Social data, the video has been liked over 2,500 times and reposted more than 1,100 times.
