Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of being behind the assassination attempt on top Russian General Vladimir Alekseyev, who was shot and wounded in Moscow.
Speaking during a meeting with the Swiss Foreign Minister, Lavrov stated that the attack constitutes a deliberate action by Ukraine to hinder the peace negotiation process.
According to him, the event proves the determination of the authorities in Kiev to provoke and undermine any diplomatic efforts.
"This terrorist attack once again confirmed the determination of the Zelensky regime to constantly provoke with the aim of disrupting the negotiation process. The regime is ready to do everything to convince its Western sponsors not to give up on Kiev's attempt to prevent the achievement of a just solution," Lavrov declared.
Meanwhile, Russian authorities have announced that General Vladimir Alekseyev was wounded this morning inside an apartment in northwest Moscow. The Russian Investigative Committee reported that an as yet unidentified person shot him several times and fled the scene.
According to authorities, Alekseyev was transported to the hospital and is under medical care, under constant monitoring. Investigators have seized security camera footage in the area and have initiated procedures to identify and arrest the perpetrator.
General Alekseyev serves as deputy chief of the Main Directorate of the General Staff at the Russian Defense Ministry, one of the key structures in the Russian military hierarchy. So far, authorities have not provided information on the motives for the attack.
The incident comes at a time of heightened security tensions and mutual accusations between Moscow and Kiev, while Lavrov's claims have not been officially commented on by the Ukrainian side.
