"The peaceful sleep is over"/ Russia openly threatens Europe, is Putin

The event in Romania is a wake-up call for all of Europe...

The war in Ukraine is no longer just a conflict taking place on Europe's eastern borders. The drone strike on a residential building in the Romanian city of Galați during Russian attacks on Ukraine and threatening statements by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev have reignited fears that the conflict could spill over Ukraine's borders and directly involve European countries.

For the first time since the start of the Russian invasion in 2022, two Romanian citizens were injured in an incident involving Russian drones. Although Moscow continues to deny responsibility, claiming there is no evidence that the aircraft was Russian, the fact remains that the attack took place on the territory of a NATO member state. This makes the incident much more than a technical error or a random deviation of the drone's trajectory.

In a statement that sounds like a direct threat to European citizens, former Russian President Dimitry Medvedev tweeted that European Union countries have already entered a war against Russia through their support for Ukraine. He warned that "peaceful sleep is over" for them.

"Citizens of the European Union countries, you should understand that your authorities have unilaterally entered the war with Russia. Therefore, be careful and do not be surprised by anything. The peaceful sleep is over. But you know who to ask for the reason," Medvedev declared.

Essentially, Medvedev is warning that if the West continues to support Kiev, then European citizens too must get used to the possibility of incidents, attacks, and insecurity.

This is precisely why the event in Romania is being viewed with alarm in European capitals. If until yesterday the danger was perceived as limited to Ukrainian territory, today drones and missiles are getting closer and closer to NATO borders. A mistake, a miscalculation or a deliberate attack could cause a crisis much greater than what Europe has experienced so far.

Bucharest's reaction was immediate. Two F-16 jets took to the air as soon as the flying objects were identified, while the Romanian government informed NATO and requested the acceleration of the supply of anti-drone systems. The Atlantic Alliance also strongly condemned the incident, calling it another example of Russian irresponsibility.

However, the biggest concern is not just related to the latest attack. According to Romanian authorities, 47 cases of Russian drone fragments have been recorded on the country's territory since the beginning of the war, 12 of them this year alone. This shows that the incidents are becoming more frequent and that the border between the war in Ukraine and European security is becoming more fragile.

At the heart of these attacks are the Shahed drones, or Geran-2 as they are called in Russian. Originally modeled after the Iranian Shahed-136 and later assembled in Russian factories, these drones have become Moscow's most widely used weapon. With a range of up to 2,000 kilometers and the capacity to carry tens of kilograms of explosives, they are cheap, numerous, and difficult to neutralize in mass attacks.

It is this combination of low cost and high effectiveness that is changing the nature of warfare. Russia can launch hundreds of drones in a single night, exerting constant pressure on Ukrainian air defenses and increasing the risk that some of them will deviate or end up in neighboring countries.

The event in Romania is a wake-up call for all of Europe. Although no one wants a direct confrontation between Russia and NATO, the reality on the ground is that the boundaries of the conflict are becoming increasingly blurred. And when a drone strikes a palace on the territory of an Alliance country, while one of the Kremlin's top figures warns that "the peaceful sleep is over," the question is no longer whether war could touch Europe, but how prepared Europe is if it does.
