The US president held a two-hour meeting at the White House, but did not make a final decision on the proposal to extend the ceasefire with Tehran.
There is still no “white smoke” from US President Donald Trump on a deal with Iran. After a meeting that lasted about two hours in the White House Situation Room, Trump left without making a final decision on the proposal aimed at extending the ceasefire and creating conditions for the continuation of negotiations between the two countries.
Although the US president had hinted on social media before the meeting that he was ready to make a decision, administration sources said that some key issues still remain open. According to a senior US official, Washington believes a deal is achievable, but negotiators are still discussing important details, including the unlocking of Iranian funds frozen abroad.
Trump has demanded that any deal include reopening the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping, guarantees from Iran that it will not develop nuclear weapons and measures that would allow the United States to control the issue of Iranian enriched uranium. Tehran has consistently rejected these demands, calling them unacceptable.
On the other hand, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei stated that contacts and exchange of messages between Iran and the US continue, but a final agreement has not yet been reached. He emphasized that the current talks are focused on ending the conflict and not on the Iranian nuclear program.
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held talks with his counterpart from Oman, one of the countries playing a mediating role in the process. The discussions also focused on the future management of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important corridors for the transport of oil and gas.
An eventual agreement would end the tensions of recent weeks, which have affected international energy markets and raised concerns about a new military escalation in the Middle East. For now, however, negotiations continue and the parties remain far from announcing a final agreement.
