Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeated his call for his country to be given the opportunity to produce Patriot missiles, following Thursday's deadly Russian attack.
Ukraine has US-made Patriot air defense systems, which are the only ones in its arsenal that can withstand Russia's ballistic missiles. However, Kiev aims to develop the capacity to produce these missiles domestically.
" To reliably protect lives, we need our own production," Zelensky declared in a video posted on the X platform.
The Ukrainian president announced that discussions with the US administration on this issue have been ongoing for a long time and called on US President Donald Trump to take concrete steps to support the protection of lives in Ukraine.
According to Zelensky, the production of Patriot missiles in Ukraine or in cooperation with European partner countries would also be in the interest of the United States, strengthening joint defense capabilities.
After visiting one of the areas hit by the attacks, Zelensky released an extended statement and images from the scene. He called on Ukraine's allies to act more decisively.
"It is important that our partners do not stand idly by while human lives are being destroyed. Pressure must be exerted on Russia and it must be forced to end this aggression ," the Ukrainian president said.
Zelensky also stressed the need to further strengthen Ukraine's air defense and to purchase new weapons from the United States within the framework of the PURL initiative.
