Spain confirmed their status as one of the main contenders for the trophy, defeating Austria 3-0 in the match held at the “SoFi Stadium” in Los Angeles. Thanks to this success, “La Roja” secures a place in the quarterfinals of the World Cup.
The Spaniards dominated the game and opened the scoring in the 36th minute. After a perfectly constructed move, Mark Kukureja served Mikel Ojarzabal, who made no mistake in front of goal, scoring his third personal goal in this World Cup.
At the end of the first half, Spain came very close to scoring a second goal. Alex Baena's free kick was blocked by the crossbar, while Lamin Jamal was stopped by a spectacular save from goalkeeper Aleksandër Schlager. The first half ended with a minimal lead of 1-0.
Austria tried to react after the break. In the 61st minute, Sasa Kalajdzic tried a header, but the ball went narrowly over the crossbar.
Just five minutes later, Spain doubled their lead. Alex Baena crossed accurately into the area, and Pedro Porro headed past the Austrian goalkeeper to make it 2-0.
In the 89th minute, the final blow came. Again Mark Kukurej provided the assist, while Mikel Ojarzabal scored his second personal goal and Spain's third, sealing a convincing 3-0 victory.
With this triumph, Spain advances to the quarterfinals of the World Cup, where they will face the winner of the Portugal-Croatia match. For Austria, meanwhile, their journey in this World Cup ends at this stage.
