The 46-year-old, born in Georgia and residing in Munich, is accused of supervising a journalist critical of the Iranian regime.
A Greek citizen has appeared before a London court accused of acting on behalf of a foreign intelligence service to spy on a journalist critical of the Iranian regime.
Prosecutor Lee Ingham said the 46-year-old visited several addresses linked to the journalist during his time in Britain, where he photographed and filmed the properties and vehicle number plates. During his second visit, he is alleged to have placed a hidden camera, disguised inside a sock, which had the ability to transmit data to unknown persons abroad.
British authorities accuse him of aiding the secret service of a foreign state, believed to be Iran. According to the prosecution, the target of his activities was a journalist for Iran International, a Persian-language channel known for its critical stance towards the Iranian government.
Investigations show that the accused travelled to the United Kingdom in two periods: from 16 to 21 April and from 12 to 14 May.
According to information made public so far, the 46-year-old was born in Georgia, lives in Munich, Germany, and previously resided in Xanthi, Greece.
He has pleaded not guilty to the charges. The court ordered him to remain in custody until the next hearing on June 19, when he will appear before the Central Criminal Court in London.
