South Korea coach Hong Myung-bo has announced his resignation following the team's elimination in the group stage of the World Cup. His departure comes after public criticism from the country's president, Lee Jae-myung.
In a response published on the X platform, President Lee questioned the manner in which Hong was appointed to lead the national team. According to him, the selection was not based on professional competence.
"Once again, it was proven that choosing the right people is crucial. When incompetent leaders are appointed because of loyalty and not ability, such an outcome is completely predictable," Lee declared.
Commenting on South Korea's early elimination, the president added that he was "completely shocked" by the result and warned of deep reforms in football administration to avoid a repeat of such a failure.
Lee asked the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to investigate in detail the circumstances of the elimination, analyze the causes and draft concrete measures to improve the system. He emphasized that participation in the World Cup is also financed with public funds and that institutions are responsible for the results.
Hong Myung-bo is one of the most recognizable figures in Korean football. As captain, he led South Korea to a fourth-place finish at the 2002 World Cup, which was held in his home country and Japan. He also coached the team at the 2014 World Cup, where the team was also eliminated in the group stage, finishing bottom of the group behind Belgium, Algeria and Russia.
Hong returned to the South Korea bench in July 2024, succeeding German Jürgen Klinsmann.
