Belgium qualified for the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Cup after defeating the United States 4-1 in the round of 16. Romelu Lukaku scored the fourth goal in extra time, sealing the Belgian victory.
Immediately after Lukaku's goal, he and several teammates celebrated by imitating Donald Trump's signature dance moves, a gesture that was interpreted as a symbolic message to the American president. According to reports, the Royal Belgian Football Federation also reacted after the match with a post on the X platform, where it wrote: "Overturn this!", ironically mocking the controversies of recent days.
The match was played in the shadow of the huge debate that arose from FIFA's decision to suspend the application of the punishment of the American striker Folarin Balogun, who was punished with a red card in the challenge against Bosnia and Herzegovina. The decision was made after Donald Trump asked FIFA President Gianni Infantino to review the case. FIFA clarified that the red card was not canceled, but the one-match suspension was suspended under the Disciplinary Code, allowing Balogun to play against Belgium.
Trump's intervention sparked a backlash in the football world. UEFA publicly criticized FIFA's decision, while the Belgian Federation objected to Balogun's eligibility to play in the match.
