During the hearing, Ilir Selmani denied the charges, insisting that they have no connection to the crime for which he was convicted.
Under strict security measures, the hearing of the Appeal of the Special Court against Corruption and Organized Crime against Ilir Selmani, convicted in the first instance for involvement in the murder of former police officer Santiago Malko, one of the most sensational criminal events of recent years, was held today.
The hearing began at around 2:30 PM, where representatives of the Special Prosecution Office requested the upholding of Selmani's 28-year prison sentence, considering his involvement in the execution of Santiago Malko, an event that occurred on August 19, 2019 in the Porcelan area of Tirana, proven.
During the hearing, Ilir Selmani denied the charges, insisting that they have no connection to the crime for which he was convicted.
"I am innocent, I have no connection to this incident," he declared before the jury.
However, there were tense moments in the courtroom, where Santiago Malko's mother was present. She demanded that the court uphold the maximum sentence requested by SPAK, while expressing her emotions that her family has been waiting for justice for years.
"This guy killed my son, he should be sentenced to 28 years in prison, or bring my son home so I can see him. Get this guy out," she declared during the hearing.
Ilir Selmani is currently under the security measure "house arrest", after a few months ago he benefited from a change in the measure due to exceeding the detention deadlines, a decision that sparked numerous reactions due to the high profile of the case.
However, the security measure does not change the fact that he was found guilty by the Special Court in the first instance and the case is now being reviewed in the Appeals Court.
The GJKKO appeal is expected to review the evidence and claims of the parties before issuing a final decision regarding the judicial fate of Ilir Selmani.
How was Santiago Malko executed?
Santiago Malko was killed on the evening of August 19, 2019 in the Porcelani area of Tirana, in a carefully organized assassination that investigators have described as a mafia execution.
According to the investigation file, at the time of the attack, Malko was driving his BMW X5 and talking on the phone. Investigations have concluded that he had slowed down the vehicle, not realizing that he had been being followed by two vehicles for several minutes.
A review of the security cameras showed that a Volkswagen Golf 6 was driving behind the victim's vehicle, while a black Mercedes-Benz CLS was also located at a close distance, which according to the prosecution was used by the suspected perpetrators of the assassination.
Malko was shot with automatic rifle fire, killing him on the spot. After the execution, the perpetrators fled the scene, while a few hours later the Mercedes-Benz CLS was found burned in the village of Ferraj.
During the examination of the burned-out vehicle, the investigation team seized a firearm, suspected of being the weapon used in the crime, as well as other items, including gloves, sneakers and clothing, suspected to have been used by the perpetrators during the execution.
According to SPAK's investigations, the main lead was that of a murder related to conflicts between criminal groups. The prosecution has raised suspicions that the execution was related to Malko's involvement in several criminal events that occurred earlier in Tirana, some of which still remain unsolved.
