Heat hits Europe

Over 1,300 deaths have been linked to the heatwave that has hit Europe since June 21, as extreme temperatures continue to break records.

Europe continues to grapple with a prolonged heatwave, which is causing severe consequences in some countries. The World Health Organization (WHO) announced that over 1,300 deaths have been linked to the extreme temperatures that have hit the continent since June 21.

According to the WHO, temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius are expected to affect at least 191 million people in Europe.

In Germany, where temperatures have reached record highs, authorities in Berlin are using water cannon vehicles to cool citizens in public spaces.

Meanwhile, in France, a video that has gone viral shows dozens of people running towards an electrical appliance store as soon as the doors open, trying to buy air conditioners and fans. The footage shows people pushing and shoving to secure the cooling equipment.

The scenes have prompted numerous reactions on social media, while demand for cooling equipment continues to increase due to high temperatures.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated on the X platform that since June 21, over 1,300 additional deaths related to high temperatures have been recorded in Europe.

"Currently, 150 million people are living in extreme heat conditions. Hundreds of people have lost their lives, schools have been closed and power grids are facing great pressure," he said.

In the Czech Republic, a new national record of 41.1 degrees Celsius was recorded in Doksany, north of Prague.

Germany also set a new absolute temperature record, with 41.7 degrees Celsius in Koschen, in the state of Brandenburg, near the border with Poland, according to preliminary data from the German Meteorological Service (DWD).

The high temperatures have also affected transport. In the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, rail services have been reduced on a major line, while trams have been suspended in Leipzig. German media report that many residents have chosen to stay at home until sunset.

In Rome, Pope Leo XIV thanked the faithful who participated in Sunday prayer in St. Peter's Square, despite high temperatures.

In France, although the heat wave is showing signs of weakening, Health Minister Stéphanie Rist told the newspaper La Tribune that its impact could last up to 10 days even after temperatures drop.

"This episode is not over yet," she warned in an interview with the BFM television network.

Meanwhile, storms that hit parts of France on Sunday evening left thousands of families without electricity.
