Albania's next match in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers will be away to Latvia, an interesting duel that will be judged by a team of Turkish referees.
The one who has been appointed to lead the challenge is a very well-known name on the international scene, but for the wrong reason. It is Halil Umut Meler, the Turkish referee who in December 2023 was the victim of violence against him by the president of the Ankaragyçy club, Faruk Koça.
The latter entered the pitch and punched the referee in the face at the end of a Turkish Super League match against Rizespor, while other members of the Ankaragyçy club kicked him as he lay on the ground. Meler ended up in hospital with fractures, the club president resigned and ended up behind bars, while the championship was suspended for a week in protest of this serious incident.
His assistants in the Latvia-Albania duel will be Kerem Ersoj and İbrahim Çaglar Ujarçan, while the fourth official has been appointed Oguzhan Çakır. Meanwhile, the two Germans Harm Osmers and Daniel Schlager will be responsible for the VAR. What also stands out is that the referee observer for this challenge will be the Italian Gianluca Roki.
