Iberian derby in the Nations League final/ Can Portugal dethrone Spain?

Two of the three previous winners of this competition meet at the Allianz Arena in Munich on Sunday in the final of the 2024/25 UEFA Nations League (UNL), in what will be the first ever final involving all Iberian teams in a major competition. Portugal secured their place in the final on Wednesday, where they secured a 2-1 victory over Germany, the first time they have won that particular match in 25 years!

Roberto Martínez will now be aiming for his current team's first win against Spain, his homeland, since 2010 (D4 L2), with Portugal failing to win either of their previous two matches (D1 L1) and scoring just one goal in their last four meetings overall.

However, finding the net has not been a problem for them this Nations League season, scoring 2+ goals in six of their nine matches (6 wins, 2 draws, 1 loss) and six goals from kick-off onwards, including extra time, over their last two matches.

Spain started this Champions League campaign with a goalless draw against Serbia but have won seven of their subsequent eight matches, drawing just one, scoring 23 times in the process, barring their penalty shootout triumph over the Netherlands in the quarter-finals. They confirmed their place in the final with a thrilling 5-4 victory over France on Thursday night, a match that ended much closer than expected with Luis de la Fuente's men leading 4-0 after 55 minutes and 5-1 going into the 79th minute.

Current European and Champions League champions, Spain will be playing in their third consecutive final in this latest competition. They lost 2-1 to France at San Siro in 2021, before beating Croatia on penalties in Rotterdam two years later, and victory here will take them to next year's FIFA World Cup with the chance to keep all three major international trophies open to them.
