Full interview/ Accused of being a man, volleyball player bursts into tears: I

It had never happened before in Albanian sports, even foreign athletes, to be discussed, suspected, asked for, let alone suspended, for lack of a gender test.

But this time it is women's volleyball player, Brazilian Dinamo player Nayara Ferreira, who has been suspected and asked to confirm her female gender through a blood test.

Suspicions? Just hallway chatter. And that was enough for the Brazilian athlete, in addition to being isolated at home for more than a week, to suffer a psychological shock that took us a long time to get under control, for her to make this exclusive confession to Top Channel journalist Endi Tufa, an interview that was broadcast on Top Story.

Journalist: You're saying that you're not in a very normal situation. Can you tell us more about that?

Nayara Ferreira: I will speak Portuguese, because it is easier for me to express what I feel and everything that is happening. This is a very difficult situation for me. It is the first time I have experienced something like this in my entire career. I have been playing volleyball since I was 12 years old.

Nayara Ferreira: I am away from my family. I think all volleyball players will understand what I am going to say now. I am away from my family and I have to face this situation alone, without their support, without having the people I love around me. It is very difficult for me to experience all this. As you said, my life is private. I am one of those people who do things offline, so I keep things to myself. What is happening to me now is discrimination. I do not accept this. They have not responded to me and have not given me any legal reason why they did this. They just did it. When I asked an official of the federation – I do not even know who it was – he said that “it is a private document and I cannot show it”. I said: “Ah, is it private? What is private to you about my life? Why?” This is how I feel right now. I have no words to describe it. I have played in many countries and I do not know how many volleyball players I have played with in this world. Now I feel devastated. That's what I wanted to say.

Journalist: You are strong and you can come back even stronger.

Nayara Ferreira: Well, let's see what happens with my life, because now I'm in the middle of this situation.

Journalist: Yes, you can win the trial.

Nayara Ferreira: I am 100% female, and this is something I don't have to explain. I don't need to tell you that I am female, that I was born female. You just noticed how I dress, how long my hair is, my physique, if I have muscles or tattoos. That's all. What you did is discrimination. And I think that whoever discriminates against someone has a hard time sleeping peacefully. This is inhuman and unacceptable. I don't know how your federation president can sleep in such a situation. How can he sleep with this on his conscience? That's my question.

Journalist: You couldn't sleep?

Nayara Ferreira: I haven't slept, I haven't eaten, I haven't even drunk water. This is my life right now. So, thank you Albanian Federation for doing this for me. Thank you very much!

Journalist: There are people who publicly support your opinion.

Nayara Ferreira: Yes, I have some people around me who support me and who believe that the truth is on my side.

Journalist: Do you know that public opinion and opinion are with you? You should know that.

Nayara Ferreira: I know very well, but it's not easy. The truth will come out and I'm not afraid of that. I'm not afraid. That's what I wanted to say and that's it.
