A major scandal has engulfed Turkish football, with at least 152 referees implicated in betting.
This has caused the President of the Turkish Federation, Ibrahim Haciosmanoglu, to react and warn of extreme measures.
According to what has been discovered, out of a total of 571 referees in professional categories, 371 have accounts with betting companies. Of these, 152 have been caught placing bets.
One referee has bet on 18,227 matches, while 10 others have bet on at least 10,000 matches.
"We are determined to cleanse football of all traces of corruption. We will not make any exceptions," said Haciosmanoglu, who said 22 of the 371 are referees who compete at the national level ("the highest level"). The Turkish federation president, however, did not specify their identities nor did he say whether there were any suspects in betting on matches they had refereed.
