One of Iran's most prominent Shiite clerics, Nasser Makarem Shirazi, declared during Ali Khamenei's funeral ceremony in Tehran that those responsible for the assassination of the former Supreme Leader will not escape what he called "divine punishment and just punishment."
In his speech, Shirazi urged Iranians not to think the war is over, stressing that the confrontation with what he called the "front of arrogance" will continue. The statement was interpreted as a clear message about the continuation of the confrontational rhetoric from the Iranian religious leadership.
Funeral ceremonies for Ali Khamenei are taking place in Tehran, months after his assassination in attacks that marked the start of the war between Iran, the United States and Israel. Iranian authorities have organized a program of ceremonies spanning several days, as large crowds of citizens and officials have gathered in the capital to bid farewell to the former supreme leader.
Crowds of Iranians mourning the former Supreme Leader have packed the venue for the ceremony, even into the night. Iran's metro network said it had recorded 7 million passengers in a few hours.
Khamenei's body will be taken to several holy sites and then return to Tehran on Thursday for another procession to Mashhad, to be buried next to the tomb of another medieval Shiite imam.
