Kosovo Prime Minister says new election process would not solve quorum problem in Parliament
Kosovo Prime Minister and leader of the Vetevendosje Movement, Albin Kurti, has called on political parties to avoid new elections and find a solution for electing the President.
In a statement addressed to citizens, Kurti said that the 10th Legislature has elected the presidency of the Assembly and the Government, so it should also conclude the process for the head of state.
According to him, new elections would create unnecessary costs for the budget and delay the functioning of institutions. Kurti mentioned that just organizing them would cost Kosovo at least 10 million euros.
He linked the blockade to the quorum of 80 MPs required to elect the President. Kurti said that a new electoral process does not guarantee a solution, as the result could turn out to be similar to the current composition of the Assembly.
The leader of the VV declared that his party had won the majority of votes and mandates. He said that the LVV had received 51.1% of the votes and 57 deputies, while the parliamentary majority reached 66 deputies.
Kurti said that the opposition has been offered several opportunities to break the deadlock. He mentioned the offer to the LDK for co-government, with the post of deputy prime minister and four ministries, as well as the proposal for this party to take over the leadership of the Assembly. According to him, both were rejected.
Regarding PDK, Kurti said that he has proposed that this party take the post of Speaker of the Parliament, mentioning Bedri Hamza or Vlora Çitaku as possibilities, with a change in the position of the current Speaker of the Parliament, Albulena Haxhiu.
He added that the opposition has not presented any name for a consensual candidate for President, neither in meetings nor publicly.
Kurti demanded respect for the election results and the continuation of the work of institutions without going to repeat elections.
