Pope Leo XIV has again called for the continuation of peace talks between the United States and Iran, highlighting the grave consequences that the conflict has had on the civilian population.
In a statement given during a flight to Rome, after a visit to four African countries, the Pope said it is imperative that the parties engage in dialogue to avoid further escalation of the situation.
"I would encourage the continuation of the peace dialogue, for all parties to make every effort to promote peace, to remove the threat of war, and to respect international law," he declared.
The Pope also emphasized his stance against war, underlining the need for solutions that stem from cooperation and understanding.
"As a pastor, I cannot be pro-war and I would like to encourage everyone to make an effort to seek answers that come from a culture of peace, not a culture of hatred and division," he added.
His statements come after a fierce public debate with US President Donald Trump, who had reacted with criticism of the Pope for his positions on the US-Israeli military operation in Iran.
In an emotional moment, Pope Leo XIV also shared the story of a Muslim child from Lebanon who had held a “Welcome Pope Leo” banner during his visit last year, but who later lost his life during the final phase of the war. “In this final phase of the war he was killed,” the Pope said.
