With only a few days left before the constitutional deadline for electing a President, Kosovo faces the risk of a new political crisis.
Prime Minister Albin Kurti has warned that the lack of an agreement between the parties could lead the country to back-to-back elections. According to him, such a scenario would not bring a solution, but would deepen the institutional deadlock.
"If we go to new elections, we will have no choice, since we will have to go to new elections again, and after them we will have to go to new elections again," Kurti said.
The Prime Minister accused the opposition of not being interested in an agreement and ending the current situation.
"I don't know how we can have 80 MPs, so it is necessary to come to an agreement. They (the opposition) do not seem ready and interested in an agreement, and this is a great harm to the state of Kosovo ," he declared.
Meanwhile, time to resolve this issue is running out. There are about five days left until the deadline set by the Constitutional Court. The election of the President requires a qualified majority in the first two rounds or 61 votes in the third round, but with the presence of at least 80 deputies in the hall.
In conditions where no single political force has the necessary votes in the 120-seat Assembly, reaching an inter-party agreement remains essential to avoid an election cycle and a prolonged political crisis.
