The Prime Minister seeks agreement within the legislature and criticizes the opposition for rejecting the proposals
Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti has requested that the current composition of the Assembly complete the process of electing the president, considering it unnecessary to hold new elections.
He stressed that the result of the elections held on December 28 was clear on the night of the counting and that the deputies must reflect this reality in the full functioning of the institutions. According to him, the country already has an Assembly and a government, while the position of the president remains to be filled.
Kurti noted that the opposition's rejection of the offers remains incomprehensible due to the balance of power in the Assembly. He emphasized that the majority led by the Vetevendosje Movement has received over half of the popular vote, while the Democratic Party of Kosovo has a significantly smaller number of MPs.
In this context, he explained that he cannot appoint to high positions people who do not have direct support from the citizens' vote, linking this stance to the election result and representation in the Assembly.
To overcome the impasse, Kurti has proposed a redistribution of institutional roles. According to this idea, the opposition could take over the leadership of the Assembly through names like Bedri Hamza or Vlora Çitaku, while Albulena Haxhiu, currently the Speaker of the Assembly and acting President, would move to another function within this institution.
He emphasized that such a solution would enable the continuation of the institutional process without interruption and without the need for a new electoral process, asking all parties to act in accordance with the election results and the responsibility they have in the Assembly.
