The Speaker of the Parliament and Acting President of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu, has announced that Friday, April 24, 2026, has been declared a day of state mourning in Kosovo, in honor of the life and contribution of academic Rexhep Qosja, who passed away at the age of 89.
In her public reaction, Haxhiu emphasized that this decision is an expression of respect and gratitude for the figure of Qosje, describing him as one of the most important personalities who gave Albanian culture knowledge, work, and authority.
" By declaring a day of state mourning, we honor a prominent figure who left a deep mark on national thought and culture ," she said.
Rexhep Qosja was one of the most well-known figures of Albanian literature, literary criticism and intellectual thought. He was born on June 25, 1936 in Vuthaj (Montenegro), while his most important academic and cultural activity was carried out in Kosovo.
Qosja studied Albanian language and literature at the University of Prishtina, where he later worked as a lecturer and researcher. He became one of the leading figures of the Prishtina Albanological Institute, where he contributed for decades to the field of literary and historical studies. Rexhep Qosja is particularly known for his works in literary criticism, literary history, and essays. He has analyzed in depth the development of Albanian literature and its main figures. Among the most well-known works are studies on the Albanian Renaissance and modern authors, as well as analyses of Albanian cultural identity.
In literary fiction, he has left his mark with the novel "Death Comes to Me from Such Eyes", one of the most important works of contemporary Albanian prose.
