Kosovo declared today a national day of mourning in honor of academic Rexhep Qosja, who passed away yesterday at the age of 90.

Tributes are being held in his honor at the Kosovo Assembly, while citizens have the opportunity to express their condolences in the Book of Mourning, established for this purpose.

A day earlier, the Speaker of the Parliament, Albulena Haxhiu, declared April 24 a national day of mourning, highlighting the academic's extraordinary contribution.

"With this decision, our state expresses its respect and gratitude for a personality who gave Albanian culture knowledge, work and authority ," Haxhiu said in the statement.

Academic Rexhep Qosja was buried on Thursday in a family ceremony, without the presence of politicians and the media, in accordance with his will.

During the commemorative meeting organized by the Kosovo Academy of Sciences and Arts, Prime Minister Albin Kurti highly praised his figure and work, describing him as a powerful intellectual and national voice.

"His studies on the Renaissance, especially the work "The Great Order", dedicated to our national poet, Naim Frashëri, or the studies on Asdren and others, helped a lot in the national formation of Albanians, under the former Yugoslavia. When the dissolution of Yugoslavia began, and the oppression of Albanians increased, Rexhep Qosja became the most prominent Albanian academic and intellectual voice. He denounced in the Yugoslav and international press the lies and propaganda of those Serbian intellectuals who would write and support the infamous memorandum of the Serbian academy from 1986, and who prepared the ground for the genocides that Serbia would undertake in the '90s" , declared Kurti.

According to the Prime Minister, Qosja was a figure who gave voice to the national cause and inspired entire generations.

"That there were also nationwide demonstrations, especially when it seemed that their wave had subsided ," declared Prime Minister Kurti.
