The post comparing himself to Jesus, the threat against Iran, and the attacks on the Pope have reopened an old debate in the US: are we dealing with an out-of-control leader, or a politician who uses excess as a weapon of power?
A sensitive and politically explosive debate has returned forcefully in the United States: is Donald Trump truly unstable, or is he consciously playing the role of an extreme leader to impose fear, obedience and public domination? According to an article in Corriere della Sera, the discussion has been reignited after a series of outbursts that have shocked even parts of the conservative camp itself.
The final spark was a post on Truth Social, since deleted, in which Trump compared himself to the healing Jesus. Then came even more serious statements: the threat that “an entire civilization will die tonight,” in reference to Iran, as well as attacks on the Pope, whom he called weak against crime and incompetent in foreign policy. For many critics, these are no longer simply electoral provocations, but signals of increasingly unpredictable behavior.
The White House has denied the allegations, while Trump himself continues to portray himself as a “genius” and claims to have passed every cognitive test. But the debate is no longer limited to Democrats, TV satirists or mental health experts commenting from afar. According to the article, former Trump allies, right-wing figures, retired military personnel, diplomats and former American and foreign officials are also expressing doubts.
A Reuters/Ipsos poll cited by Corriere showed that in February, about 61% of respondents considered Trump "increasingly unpredictable with age," while the perception of his mental capacity and ability to deal with complex challenges had declined significantly compared to 2023. This shows that the problem is not just moral or stylistic, but is turning into a matter of state credibility.
Even more significant is the fact that the criticism does not come only from the left. Marjorie Taylor Greene, once one of Trump’s most aggressive supporters, has supported the use of the 25th Amendment, arguing that threats to destroy Iranian civilization were not “harsh rhetoric” but nonsense. Other voices on the far right have also spoken in the same vein, describing Trump as deranged and no longer fully functional.
Yet within the Republican Party and the US Congress, loyalty to Trump remains almost total. This reinforces the other thesis of the debate: that Trump may not necessarily be “crazy,” but is extraordinarily skilled at using exaggeration, insults, personal myth, and verbal intimidation as instruments of power. On this reading, he is not an accident of the system, but its most brutal product.
More broadly, this story is not just about one man's temperament. It raises a fundamental question for American democracy: how far can a president's behavior be tolerated when the line between political spectacle, narcissism, and institutional danger begins to blur? Corriere recalls that doubts about the mental state of American presidents are not new, but in Trump's case they are combined with a style of governance that fuels conflict, transforms crisis into method, and turns provocation into strategy. /Pamphlet
