Amid the tensions of recent weeks with Edi Rama, Elisa Spiropali was absent this Saturday from the meeting of the Socialist Party Parliamentary Group and the government cabinet, held at the Brigades Palace.
The Speaker of the Parliament was one of two absentees from the meeting, along with Marjana Koçeku, who has now left the socialist parliamentary group.
Spiropali's absence comes at a time when her relations with the prime minister have appeared strained. In recent weeks, she has publicly articulated positions that have been interpreted as criticism of the way she exercises power, while in one of the last meetings, Rama reminded her that she was approaching the "red line."
Although not in the hall, Spiropali became part of the discussions through the Prime Minister's references. During his speech before the Socialist MPs, Rama mocked the idea of a "New Albania", a concept that the Speaker of the Parliament has promoted in her recent public appearances.
A few days ago, Spiropali declared that Albania needs a new political agreement and more institutional control over power. From the socialists' meeting, Rama responded with irony to those who, according to him, are seeking a "New Albania".
" It is also a call for a new Albania, and there are some lost souls in our party who want a new Albania ," Rama said, without mentioning names, but the statement was a direct message to Spiropali.
