Skopje Summit, Rama: We are very close to EU membership; Kos gives optimistic

We are very close to membership and I firmly believe that we will fulfill all our obligations. This was stated by Prime Minister Edi Rama in a statement to the media, at the start of the Skopje summit, where the leaders of the Western Balkan countries met with Marta Kos, the EU Commissioner for Enlargement.

Rama said that the joint plan will be fully implemented.

"We have never been closer to realizing a centuries-old aspiration and I am glad that there is a positive atmosphere in this regard. We are very close to membership and I firmly believe that we will fulfill all our obligations. The joint plan will be fully realized," said Rama.

Western Balkans and EU leaders are discussing the implementation of the Growth Plan for the region.

EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos stressed that Europe cannot be united without the Western Balkans. She added that there is now a clear consensus on enlargement, which was not the same in the past, but "the window of opportunity will not be open forever."

"We are seeing significant progress. Albania has opened three clusters in the last six months. Thank you for your contribution to the success of the enlargement process. If we continue at this pace, we will be able to open all clusters this year. Meanwhile, Montenegro closed another chapter last Friday. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the reform agenda has been approved and we are waiting for the new government, Mr. Kurti, to finally put more energy into the accession process. Meanwhile, we are already moving forward with Serbia," she said.

Kos said that the Growth Plan is completely in the hands of the countries of the region.

"This is a tool to help you with important reforms, which are also necessary to prepare you for membership. At the same time, this plan enables your citizens and businesses to benefit from the EU's single market, on equal terms with member states. And this, now - not in the distant future," she stressed.

She added that countries have done a lot, but now it is time to intensify the implementation phase.

“Simply put, this means that a new entrepreneur, for example here in Skopje or Tirana, can accept payments from all over Europe just as easily as a business in Vienna or Madrid,” Kos said.
