Defendant Meta, in his self-interview from his cell, denies knowing the prosecutor in the case, Sotir Kllapi. But the facts show that as president he himself decreed him in SPAK and gave him a hand full of praise for "an investigation without tolerance towards anyone". Lying does not save you from prison...
Since he has free time in his cell, but also the ambition to remain an actor and factor in politics, Ilir Meta has resumed his journalistic profession, giving self-interviews from prison; he asks questions himself, he answers himself, and like every prisoner who denies everything, he too is declared innocent.
In the first self-interview from the cell, Meta addressed the testimony given in SPAK by the former general secretary of the SMI, Endrit Braimllari, regarding the lobbying file in the US. He tried to justify himself by saying:
"For the first time, I learned about the process of my investigation from the media. I did not know Prosecutor Sotir Kllapi at all, and for the first time I heard his name from Endriti at the end of August 2022 in Jalë, when I had just returned to the head of the Freedom Party."
But this statement is immediately refuted. An official document proves that Ilir Meta lied publicly, not only that he knew the prosecutor, but that he had himself decreed him as President of the Republic.
On May 21, 2020, Ilir Meta, as President of the Republic, decreed Sotir Klapi as SPAK prosecutor. He followed the solemn oath-taking procedure, personally shaking his hand and wishing him success in the fight against crime and corruption. The official announcement of the Presidency stated:
"The President of the Republic, Mr. Ilir Meta, appreciates the integrity and professionalism of prosecutor Sotir Kllapi, appointing him with full confidence in his new position at SPAK. He asks him to exercise his function efficiently and impartially, without tolerating anyone, whoever they may be."
Today, when he himself is the subject of a direct investigation by the prosecutor he decreed with his own hand, Meta's memory seems to have suffered a "functional amnesia" due to his new position as a defendant.
Is it possible for a President not to remember who he decreed in such an important institution as SPAK? Even more so when it comes to one of the figures who would later sign his own arrest?
Not only is it not credible, it is a naive lie, constructed to gain public sympathy and feed a narrative of victimization that no longer holds water.
In fact, prosecutor Sotir Kllapi, decreed by Ilir Meta himself as a man of "high professional courage and integrity", has implemented point by point the order that Meta himself gave him in 2020: not to tolerate anyone. And he has done this, by investigating and bringing to justice precisely Ilir Meta.
This is perhaps the greatest irony of Albanian justice: when former leaders fall victim to the institutions they themselves signed. And instead of repentance, they produce auto-interviews./ Pamphlet
