Everyone is calling him the moral winner of the May 11 elections! Many are reading beyond the votes, the message that the Democrats gave through him, and others are raising expectations for him, in relation to what should and will happen with the DP and Sali Berisha, at a time when only God can remove the latter.
He was among the most voted in the DP and had to compete with his colleague within the DP, who also received the same number of votes and was left in the danger zone like him, contrary to what the primaries dictated. Clearly because Berisha himself did not consider them his own.
We are talking about Ilir Alimehmet, the candidate who is most likely very upset about not entering Parliament, because the massive vote of the citizens of Tirana prevented his defeat. He comes tonight in an interview with "Të Pashoj", where he also stopped at those who should be held responsible for the defeat.
-Is there any responsibility for the DP, or from President Berisha? He does not take responsibility.
We had an election, and in 2025 we have the same problems as in every election before. This is what the OSCE says. They declare that fines have been forgiven, there was involvement of criminal groups. They do not say “it was reported to us”, but “we have witnessed” – that is, they were present themselves and saw that the competition is not equal.
This is the system. Within this system, the opposition is not favored, and this has led to a reduction in its mandates, because the number of mandates is also small, and as a result, many people are left out.
Third, the relevant forums, according to the regulations, in our country chose a part of the closed list and an open part – if I'm not mistaken on March 12. And there was, how should I say, a slight irritation when the lists were opened. I'm talking about Tirana, because I don't have accurate information about the other regions.
For Tirana, there was a dissatisfaction that was felt in the polls and, unfortunately, brought the campaign back in time. Despite all the competition, meetings, handshakes and explanations of the situation by all the candidates on the open list – which we all did – the same spirit that existed before March 12th could not be restored.
The process is not over. The CEC has not yet announced the final tables, and a real analysis cannot be done without them. A deep analysis is needed, not only numerical, but also political.
– You received so many votes, but when candidates who don't receive votes, candidates who are not considered the future, are included in the list... because votes don't come only from militants.
To be clear, the Democratic Party has its duties.
– Is Berisha responsible for the lists?
I have been on the ground and have seen the reality for all parties. I do not consider someone who holds elections under unequal conditions a winner. We have been in such conditions for 50 years.
– That's not the only reason for the loss...
It is not the only one, but it is the main one.
– Why didn't they steal your votes?
You don't know how many votes I actually had. Is there responsibility? There definitely is – and the responsibility goes up.
A full analysis must be done, based on the final OSCE report. A deep analysis, both numerical and political. Responsibilities must be seen from both sides – both the opponent and us.
Based on the results that will emerge, whoever has the merit to move forward, let him move forward; whoever is responsible for the loss, must take a step back. This is the reality in every serious organization.
