Ilir Alimehmeti, who ran on the open list of candidates for MP in the Tirana District, under the coalition's slogan 'PD-ASHM', said that on May 11 there was not a competition for ideas and programs between political parties, but a competition between candidates of the entities themselves, those considered as the open list.
In the podcast 'Të Pashoq', Alimehmeti said that this electoral system that was applied on May 11th leaves everyone lost.
He emphasized the decline in the quality of the composition of Parliament, as MPs are not elected by the people, but are appointed by party forums.
Do you feel upset that you didn't get the mandate of an MP even though you received over 17 thousand votes, or did the moral victory outweigh this?
Alimehmeti: The discussion should be held on a total level. With this electoral system that the fathers have prepared for the young, elections are not exactly elections, but despite the decision of the Constitution, this system with open and closed lists was established.
The competition took place within political entities and not between political entities. So it was not a competition for political programs or ideas.
This electoral system left everyone lost. There was no competition of ideas between political parties. The open list is the only option for direct democracy.
For 20 years, we have seen a decline in quality, because it is the party forums that choose those who go to Parliament and not the people who choose.
That's why today we have unknown names, strange phenomena, people that no one knows until the day before the elections, who receive record votes, and we have seen such phenomena in Elbasan, Durrës. The question is how this new Parliament will serve the people tomorrow and this is the great sadness.
What if you get as many votes as you did and remain outside Parliament, while those who get zero votes enter?
This is the fault of the system, the system is backwards, and in time it produces anti-values. If this system were not like this, these anti-values would not be able to reach. Because this system creates ground. If it creates ground, evil sprouts. In 2025 we have the same problems as in the 2021 elections or even before. This is also what the OSCE/ODIHR says in the previous report.
