An Albanian gang was discovered after they were caught cultivating cannabis in a hidden warehouse behind a block of flats in Ostend, Belgium, after a large fire broke out in the building on July 22, 2024.
Foreign media report that firefighters, while extinguishing the flames, smelled a strong smell of cannabis and discovered eight cultivation tents with a total of 595 cannabis plants, equipped with professional lighting, ventilation and heating, while energy was illegally obtained from the garage.
Arrested at the scene was Ervin B., 22, who admitted to maintaining the plantation since February 2024, receiving 100 euros per day. Investigations also revealed the involvement of Xhuljo B., 38, Leonard M., 41, Kevin C., 36, and Angelo C., 35.
The warehouse turned out to have been rented on June 1, 2022 by Albanian Leonard M. (41 years old), under the guise of a fictitious Greek company. Investigators also managed to connect Kevin C. (36) from Ostend and Angelo C. (35) from Middelkerke to the plantation. Both took care of the plants in exchange for free cannabis.
Kevin C. said that he had met Xhuljo B. two years ago, while the latter was his neighbor below the apartment. He claimed that he had been threatened by him.
"I shouldn't have told the police anything, otherwise they would have kidnapped my children," he declared.
The Bruges court sentenced Julio B. and Leonard M. this week to three years in prison each. Ervin B. received two years in prison, while Angelo C. was sentenced to one year in prison. Kevin C. was sentenced to eighteen months in prison, half suspended. In addition to the prison sentences, the gang must pay 173,000 euros in compensation for the energy stolen from the Fluvius network.
