Scene from the operation

Spanish police report that the organization produced marijuana on a large scale for months, with highly technical plantations and strong security measures to avoid detection.

Spanish police have dismantled an Albanian criminal organization dedicated to the cultivation of marijuana in closed environments in the province of Zaragoza. As a result of this operation, 9 people, all Albanians aged 21 to 46, were arrested, and more than 2,000 cannabis plants were seized.

The network operated from industrial warehouses and homes scattered in several municipalities around Zaragoza and stole electricity estimated to be worth 210 thousand euros.

Spanish police report that the organization produced marijuana on a large scale for months, with highly technical plantations and strong security measures to avoid detection.

How did the investigation begin?

The investigation, launched in September 2024 by the Judicial Police Team of the Civil Guard in Casetas, revealed the possible existence of several industrial buildings used for indoor marijuana cultivation near the city of Zaragoza. During the investigation, officers identified several members of the network, which temporarily ceased operations after the ringleaders returned to their country of origin.

However, at the end of this summer, the suspects returned to Spain and resumed their illegal activity, renovating warehouses to resume cannabis cultivation. After sufficient evidence was gathered, the Civil Guard launched a large-scale operation.

On December 2, eight raids were carried out in industrial warehouses located in Cuarte de Huerva, San Mateo de Gállego, La Puebla de Alfindén and Zuera, as well as in homes in the city of Zaragoza and the Garrapinillos neighborhood. Inside, several indoor cultivation facilities were discovered with a total of 2,013 marijuana plants and more than 20 kilograms of buds ready for distribution.

The buildings were fully adapted for cultivation, with separate partitions constructed of plaster to separate the different stages of plant growth. All the facilities were supplied with electricity through illegal connections to the public lighting network, using very complex electrical panels. One of the buildings was even being prepared for a new planting.

On some of these properties, people responsible for the ongoing care of the plantations were arrested, who spent the night indoors in areas equipped with mattresses, equipment and basic supplies, thus avoiding leaving the premises.

How did the organization function?

The investigation has confirmed that it was a criminal organization with a perfect hierarchy. The leader of the gang, based in the city of Zaragoza, was responsible for logistics, overseeing operations and covering expenses. Under him operated trusted associates responsible for transporting materials from other provinces to avoid raising suspicion. At a lower level were the plantation managers, who also carried out surveillance using video surveillance systems installed in warehouses. The network also used front people to rent out properties and vehicles, simulating legitimate business activities, such as storing goods.

Seizures and accusations

During the searches, significant amounts of money, mobile phones and documents relevant to the investigation were seized. The nine detainees, all Albanian citizens aged 21 to 46, were brought before a judge on December 4. They face charges of drug trafficking, electricity theft and membership in a criminal organization, as well as forgery of documents for two of them using false identities.

In this operation, carried out by the Judicial Police Team of Casetas and the Organized Crime and Anti-Drug Team (EDOA) of the Zaragoza Command, agents from the Civil Security Unit of the Command (USECIC) of Zaragoza, Huesca and Teruel participated, as well as members of the Zaragoza Dog Group with dogs specialized in drug detection./ Adapted from "Pamphlet" by  "Aragondigitales"
