Former Serious Crimes Prosecutor Eugen Beci has indicated that the file on the Peshkëpi massacre had completely disappeared from the Albanian court archives, leaving behind only the cover without any documents inside.
According to Beci, this was ascertained during verifications in the court and prosecutor's office archives, where all investigative materials of that serious event were missing.
Beci explains that the resumption of the investigations came after the State Police, Anti-Terrorism and intelligence services had brought new investigative materials and information from open and closed sources.
He adds that cooperation from the Greek side was lacking, making the investigation even more difficult.
" It wasn't just a part of the file that disappeared, but the entire archive file. It was an extremely serious and unprecedented situation. However, we managed to secure sufficient evidence to bring charges against the perpetrators," Beci told "Ma Shqip".
Beci said that Alfred Beleri has repeatedly denied participating in the murder of two Albanian soldiers at the Peshkëpi border post, but according to him, the prosecution had sufficient evidence to press charges.
The former prosecutor explains that the case was not closed due to the defendants' innocence, but due to the statute of limitations on the criminal offense.
" The court dismissed the charges due to statute of limitations, not because they were found innocent. So, they were not acquitted, but escaped the procedure because the Albanian state was not able to initiate investigations within the legal deadlines, " Beci emphasizes.
According to him, this constitutes a black mark on the Albanian state, which failed to identify the perpetrators of the murder of its two martyrs in time.
Beci estimates that this is the first time that the Albanian state has been attacked with weapons from the territory of another state and no one has been held criminally responsible for this act.
In the end, Eugen Beci states that he is not afraid to travel to Greece, emphasizing that there is no reason for a European Union country to declare him "non grata" for the work he has done in the exercise of his duties as a prosecutor.
