A cocaine trafficking network, involving Italian and Albanian citizens, was busted this Monday by Italian police in several provinces of the country.
The operation, coordinated by the Brescia Anti-Mafia Prosecutor's Office, led to the arrest of 12 people suspected of being part of the criminal organization, while the logistical base of the activity was located in Rovato, in the province of Brescia.
The operation was carried out in the early hours of the morning by the Carabinieri of the Investigation Unit of the Brescia Provincial Command, under the coordination of the Brescia Anti-Mafia Prosecutor's Office. The arrested are accused, according to their roles, of participating in a criminal organization set up for drug trafficking.
The investigations have revealed an organized structure operating mainly in the areas of Brescia and Bergamo, but with links also in other regions, especially between the Marches and Puglia. The operation also extended to Bergamo, Ancona, Brindisi, Grosseto and Mantua, while the Carabinieri also checked 13 other people suspected of links to the group.
According to Italian investigators, the organization used a pizzeria in the Brescia area as a cover for the wholesale trafficking of cocaine. To transport the drugs, the group allegedly used vehicles with hidden compartments, modified to avoid police checks.
Italian media describe this operation as one of the most important anti-drug raids in recent months in the Brescia territory.
During the previous stages of the investigation, the Carabinieri had arrested 11 people in flagrante delicto and seized around 3 kilograms of cocaine. These elements, according to the Italian authorities, strengthened the investigative file and led to the operation carried out this Tuesday.
