There is no G7 summit without a special moment from Donald Trump. Last year, the US President surprised the heads of state and government of the 7 most industrialized countries with his early departure from the summit in Kananaskis, Canada. This year, in Evian, France, he stayed until the last day of the meeting, participated in all the sessions and seemed clearly delighted by the praise for his newfound willingness to cooperate.
On Wednesday night, the seven leaders issued a final statement on the international situation, unusual for this format, in which Trump’s “strong leadership” is highlighted. Progress in negotiations with Iran constitutes a “historic opportunity to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.” German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) emphasized that, since the beginning of Trump’s second term, this was the first time that the United States had adopted a joint statement on geopolitical issues.
For the French presidency of the G7, one of the summit's achievements is considered to be the fact that Trump, after two bilateral meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, pledged "unconditional support" for Ukraine. This is stated in the final statement, which also includes a promise to strengthen sanctions against Russia. Russian oil and gas will be subject to tougher sanctions, while American exemptions will be removed. The framework agreement with Iran facilitates this step, as oil prices have already started to fall.
Trump also promised Ukraine new air defense systems, as included in the statement. As one diplomat put it, Trump already sees Zelensky as a “winner” whom he wants to support.
"It was a great summit and France did a fantastic job," Trump declared at the end of the meeting.
On Wednesday evening he continues his visit to France with a gala dinner in the Hall of Mirrors of the Palace of Versailles.
“All G7 partners will increase pressure on Moscow, including through sanctions,” the German chancellor said. This sets a new tone, he added. According to Merz, the G7 summit was “very constructive.”
Merz also confirmed that military cooperation with Ukraine will be significantly expanded. "This is really about extensive licensing, including from American companies to European manufacturers," he said.
He added that he was grateful to Trump for the high level of willingness for cooperation he had shown.
