A growing gap is being evident in the banking system between savers with large deposits and those with small savings.

While the amount of savings in banks continues to grow year after year, data from the Deposit Insurance Agency shows that, during 2025, the majority of deposits were held by a limited minority of individuals. Of the approximately 13.1 billion euros in individual deposits in banks, 5 percent of depositors own over 60 percent of the total.

According to the data, 137.5 thousand individuals have savings of over 2.5 million lekë. Although they constitute a small part of the total number of depositors, the value of their deposits reached 8.1 billion euros, reports "TCH".

By the end of 2025, individuals had 2.93 million insured bank accounts open, or 5 percent more than a year earlier. These accounts held a total of 1.39 trillion lek, an annual increase of 8.8 percent, according to the Deposit Insurance Agency.

However, in addition to the increase in the number of accounts and the amount of savings, the 2025 annual report also highlights the increase in accounts with minimal or zero balances. The agency reports that about a third of the accounts result without funds.

Over 1 million accounts have balances between 0 and 100 lekë, out of about 2.92 million registered accounts in total. This picture shows a high concentration of savings in a limited segment of depositors.

This development suggests an increase in financial concentration in the banking system. However, data on deposits alone is not sufficient, by itself, to prove the full level of economic inequality in the country, as such an assessment also requires other indicators, such as income, wealth, and consumption.
