Meloni asks Zelensky for "painful concessions"; what bargain is being negotiated behind closed doors in the West?
Italy has changed its tone towards Ukraine. At the recent meeting in Rome, Giorgia Meloni conveyed to Volodymyr Zelensky a message that was not mentioned in any official statement: the time for “painful concessions” has come. In other words, Europe is asking Kiev to prepare for compromise, perhaps even territorial surrenders.
These are the signals coming from reliable sources close to the "Palazzo Chigi", quoted by the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera. The long meeting, covered by diplomatic etiquette, was in fact colder and more tense than it appears in the protocol photos.
From support to pressure: the Italian turn
Meloni, who once enthusiastically hailed “Ukraine’s heroic resistance,” now acts as a spokesperson for the West’s strategic fatigue. Her phrase; “painful concessions,” is code for freeing the West from a heavy political, military, and economic burden that is no longer popular even at home.
But in this scheme, Italy, one of the founding countries of the European Union, does not seem to be behaving like a leading power. On the contrary, it is quietly aligning itself with the American agenda, which seeks to close the Ukrainian file before 2026.
The US, not Brussels, is deciding on peace
Meloni himself made it clear: the “solution” will not come from Brussels, but from Washington. This is a silent confession that the European Union has been de-factored from decision-making for peace. And Italy, although a weighty country in the EU, has accepted the role of second mediator.
Essentially, Italy is not acting like a great state. It is not proposing, it is not leading, but it is following directives. As Stanley Kubrick would brutally say: “Great states behave like gangsters, small states like prostitutes.” In this dark metaphor of realpolitik, Italy has chosen to be neither a gangster nor a great power, but a repeating voice of the agenda that is served to it.
What does this mean for the Balkans?
Any major compromise for Ukraine; especially if it affects territories, could open the most dangerous precedent for states with frozen conflicts and minorities instrumentalized by Moscow. Moldova, Georgia, Bosnia, and even Kosovo; all of these could be the next victims of an imposed "peaceful" logic.
For Albania, this is a moment for deep strategic reflection: will we have a voice at the tables where European security is decided, or will we remain spectators of a game where the fate of the little ones is sealed by secret agreements? / Pamphlet
