At a time when missiles are falling on Ukraine and tens of thousands of lives have been lost in a brutal aggression, Vladimir Putin appears before the cameras in Moscow and calls the leaders of the European Union "pigs," an unprecedented insult that reflects not only the arrogance of the Kremlin, but also the moral crisis of a West that continues to drag on between declarations and fear of the Russian response.
The European Union, despite strong rhetoric, is at a decision-making impasse to take the most significant action: using frozen Russian assets to finance the defense and reconstruction of Ukraine.
On the one hand, Macron and Mertz talk about historical justice; on the other, Belgium, Hungary and several other states hold the reins, looking more like timid bankers than leaders of an alliance that claims to defend democracy and peace.
While Europe fights over jurisdiction and legality, the Kremlin interprets this as weakness. Putin no longer even has a diplomatic mask; he speaks of total victory and the “liberation” of territories that historically have never belonged to Russia. His rhetoric is brutal because he knows that there are leaders facing him who are afraid to use the instruments at their disposal. Fear of precedent, of financial consequences, of a hypothetical escalation, has turned European decisions into a pantomime.
Against this backdrop, Zelensky’s call to use Russian assets is not simply a request for money. It is a test of Western political will to say: “Enough.” Because if even this frozen wealth is not put to work protecting the victim and punishing the aggressor, then what is left of the so-called international order?
